Summer Watering Restrictions

Each year we must ask you to observe lawn watering restrictions in order to ensure there is enough water for everyone.  We are authorized to add a $50 surcharge to the water bill of residents who choose not to comply.

Watering Restrictions - Lakefield & Woodland Acres By-law 2010-045


Peterborough and Woodland Acres

From June 1 to August 31

  • Even-numbered addresses may water only on even-numbered days between 7 am and 10 pm.
  • Odd-numbered addresses may water only on odd-numbered days between 7 am and 10 pm.

Lakefield

From May 15 to September 15

  • Even-numbered addresses may water only on even-numbered days from 7-9 am and 6-10 pm.
  • Odd-numbered addressess may water only on odd-numbered days from 7-9 am and 6-10 pm.

Municipal Drinking Water

The framework surrounding municipal drinking water has been changing since the Walkerton tragedy the Ministry of Environment has been working with municipal stakeholders to develop a Drinking Water Quality Management Standard (DWQMS) to complement the comprehensive legislative and regulatory framework in Ontario.

In order comply with new regulations stemming from the recommendations of Justice O'Connor, the township of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield has developed an Operational Plan that meets the requirements of the DWQMS for the new municipal licencing regulation, including a Drinking Water Quality Policy

Additional information on the new licencing program is available at the Drinking Water Ontario website. Municipal water and sewer services are available in the Lakefield Ward and in the Woodland Acres Subdivision.  

The Township of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield owns the infrastructure for both these systems and has an agreement with Peterborough Utilities Services Inc. (P.U.S.) to maintain the day-to-day operations of these systems. 

The Lakefield water treatment plant is state of the art and the environmentally friendly lagoon system for wastewater treatment, services residents very well.

Private Well and Septic Systems

The rural areas of the Township are serviced by private well and septic systems.

Water Supply Wells - Requirements and Best Management Practices

The Ministry of the Environment has released Water Supply Wells - Requirements and Best Management Practices, a comprehensive and helpful manual for industry, regulatory agencies and interested homeowners on understanding requirements of Ontario's Wells regulation (O. Reg. 903 made under the Ontario Water Resources Act).

The manual consists of fifteen chapters and features plain language summaries, illustrations, photographs and best management practices to help readers better understand the regulation and go beyond compliance.
