Draft Sign By-law
The Township of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield intends to pass a comprehensive Sign By-law in the near future, and we are soliciting input and will be accepting comments on the draft document.
Next Steps:
1. Information Gathering:
Township staff will be seeking examples from other municipalities that have successfully introduced a sign by-law while maintaining/promoting healthy economic development and request feedback and a presentation to Council with respect to their process and experience. Following which a 3rd Draft By-law will be prepared and presented to Council.
2. Public Consultation:
Stakeholders will be provided the opportunity to review the 3rd Draft Sign By-law and provide input. Relevant amendments will be made and brought forward for Council's review.
3. Legal Consultation:
The draft By-law will then be reviewed by legal council to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
4. Review & Passage:
Once legal council has reviewed and approved the draft By-law, it will be brought forward to Council for review and consideration for passage.

Trailer Park By-law Harmonization Project
The Trailer park industry is currently governed by separate by-laws in the Smith and Ennismore Wards.
The Township has identified the need to harmonize/modernize trailer park regulations and identified the following guiding principles and methodology to be used to guide the process and develop the regulations.
Guiding Principles
1. Harmonized regulations throughout the Township.
2. Fee schedule that reflects the costs associated with delivering the service.
3. Recognize the importance of trailer parks as related to the local economy.
4. Ensure that life safety issues remain paramount.
Methodology
1. Engage the public and trailer park operators/users to determine their concerns and preferences.
2. Research regulatory trends as manifested in by-laws drafted by other communities.
3. Prepare draft Bylaw and solicit stakeholder and Council feedback.
The township plans to complete the trailer park by-law development process in time for implementation in the 2013 season.
