Time in My Shoes
Monday, December 12, 2012 - St. Paul's Elementary School, Lakefield.
On Monday, December 12, 2012, the Accessibility Advisory Committee (a joint committee of the Township of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield and the County of Peterborough) presented its second annual "Time in my Shoes" program, an awareness-raising event for children in grades 1 through 8 allowing them to gain "hands-on" experience of what it might be like to live with a disability. Along with gaining valuable experience, the children also learned about empathy and inclusion.
Assisted by a number of local volunteers, teaching staff, council members and representatives from ParaSport Ontario and the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind), events included wheelchair basketball, sledge hockey, a wheelchair obstacle course and sessions about living with a visual impairment.
CNIB representatives Jennifer Millard and Warren Northcott, assisted by Accessibility Advisory Committee member Eric Thornley, spoke about the role of service animals (guide dogs), the proper protocol when encountering a person with a guide dog, braille, technological assistive devices and other activities.
ParaSport Ontario provided the wheelchairs which were used to play basketball and sledge hockey carts.
