Recreation and leisure opportunities play an important role in our community by allowing us to engage in physical activity, healthy lifestyles, to interact with one another, and to appreciate our natural environment.

The Township of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield is undertaking a Recreation Services Plan to ensure that the Township's provision and management of recreation programs, facilities and services, and the amenities available continue to meet the needs of our residents.

The Recreation Services Plan focuses on:

·         Recreation programs and services;

·         Parks, trails and open spaces;

·         Leisure facilities (arenas, community centres, sports fields, etc);

·         Site Plan for the Robert E. Young Recreation Complex;

·         Skateboard parks in the Isabel Morris Park and possible additional parks;

·         Public waterfront access; and

·         Evaluation of potential recreation use on former Ennismore Church Lands; among others.

In order to ensure that the Township's Recreation Services Plan is truly reflective of the needs of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield, we want to hear from you! In the coming months, there will be a variety of ways for the community to participate, including:

·      A household survey will be conducted by telephone in June 2011. If your household is called, you will have the opportunity to provide input that will help us to understand your recreation and leisure needs and preferences. Even if you are not able to participate in recreation activities as often as you would like, we still want to hear your opinion!

·      A community search conference will help us to identify, discuss, and prioritize the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges related to recreation and leisure services in Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield. Through invitation, the search conference will bring together diverse groups reflecting the Township's overall socio-demographic composition in order to create a shared vision of their desired future. If you are interested in receiving an invitation, please let us know and all invitees will be notified.

·      A stakeholder group survey will be conducted with user groups of the Township's recreation facilities to obtain information and opinions regarding participation levels, range of activities, key issues, and facility and program needs.

·      Interviews will be conducted with members of Township staff and officials, key agencies, and the private sector to obtain input regarding the provision and management of parks and recreation services. Discuss your opinions with your Councillor so that he or she is aware of your particular issues and needs.

·      Public meetings will be held in the Fall of 2011 to present and receive feedback pertaining to the draft recommendations of the Recreation Services Plan to interested residents and organizations. By attending, you will have the opportunity to ask questions, provide opinions and help create the most relevant Plan possible for the Township of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield.
