Emergency & Health Services

The Township of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield's emergency services include fire, police, and emergency measures planning.

Ambulance Service is coordinated through the County of Peterborough.

The Fire Department employs a full time Fire Chief, a Fire Prevention Officer and an Administrative Assistant. The remainder of the fire service is operated with volunteer fire fighters.

Police Services within Smith and Ennismore wards of the Township are policed by the Peterborough County O.P.P. Detachment and the Lakefield ward is policed by the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service.

The Township Emergency Management Department has an Emergency Plan in place to ensure the co-ordination of municipal, private and volunteer services to bring emergency situations under control as quickly as possible.

Peterborough County OPP is reminding the public

that 9-1-1 is for emergency use only!

An Emergency is any serious medical problem, any type of fire, any life-threatening situation or a crime in progress.

Do Not program 9-1-1 into your phone's auto-dial.
Do Not dial 9-1-1 to test your phone or the system
Do Not dial 9-1-1 for directions
Do Not dial 9-1-1 for information
Do Not dial 9-1-1 for road or weather conditions

If you call 9-1-1 in error, do not hang up, stay on the line and explain to the dispatcher that you do not have an emergency. If you hang up the dispatcher will call back to confirm that there is no emergency. If you don't answer, a police officer will be dispatched to check on your well being.

When you call 9-1-1, be patient while the call taker asks you questions. Listen to their instructions and be prepared to describe what is going on.

Do not hang up until told to by the call taker.
