September 2011

3rd Annual Historical Walking Tour of Lakefield - Sunday, September 11th from 1 to 4 pm.
The Lakefield Trail Stewardship Committee and the Lakefield Historical Society are having a Historical Walking Tour of the Village of Lakefield, Sunday, September 11th from 1 to 4 pm.  Only 100 tickets ($10 each) are available at HappenStance Books & Yarns, 44 Queen St. Lakefield. All proceeds will go towards repairs to the Lakefield Trail.

Meet at the Lakefield Legion at 1:00 pm.  The theme of this year's historical walk is "Industries of Lakefield - Past and Present."  This walk will take place in the east side of the village starting and finishing at the Lakefield Legion. Tea and homemade cookies will be served at the end of the walk.

Any questions, please call 652-8797.

Further Information:
At the beginning of the walk, there will be a short ceremony to unveil a new interpretive sign on the Trail near the electrical power generation plant. Lakefield was settled in the early 1800's because rapids and a falls on the Otonabee River could power local mills and associated industries. As part of the construction of the present power plant in 1926, two large concrete towers were built by the Canada Cement Company to deliver electric power to their Lakefield cement factory.

Lafarge Canada acquired Canada Cement's assets in 1970. The towers were demolished in the summer of 2010 since they were no longer in use. Lafarge has provided a grant to the Lakefield Trail and left a piece of "commemorative" concrete from the towers to be displayed by the new native plant gardens along the river south of Bridge Street. The grant help support the purchase of the native trees, shrubs and plants from the Ecology Garden in Peterborough by the Lakefield Trail Stewardship Committee.

Featured on this year's walk will be the Power Plant, Savage Arms, SGS, Lakefield Glass, Canoe and Boat Building, the Lakefield Curling Club, the Lakefield Legion and the Native Plant Garden.

On Tuesday, Aug. 30/11, The Lakefield Trail and the upcoming Historical Walk were filmed on Chex TV Newswatch - and the program aired the next night - August 31/11
