OPP Media Release : Marihuana Grows

Bear Sightings

Members of Peterborough County OPP have received complaints from residents and cottagers regarding bear activity. These incidents are County wide and not limited to just the northern and eastern Townships.

The majority of bear complaints have been of the nuisance variety but there has been one incident where lethal force had to be used by officers.

Police advise home and cottage owners to follow a few simple tips to help keep your family and pets from encountering a bear in your area.  By following these tips you can avoid attracting bears to your property; however a nuisance bear can be reported at anytime by contacting the Ministry of Natural Resources Hotline at 1-866-514-2327 or the OPP at 1-888-310-1122

Garbage:

  •  Eliminate odours. Put garbage in containers that have tight fitting lids, and only put it out on the morning of garbage day, not the night before
  • Whenever possible, store garbage in bear-resistant containers, or indoors (house, shed, garage). Do not store garbage in plywood boxes, old         freezers or vehicles
  • Put meat scraps in the freezer until garbage day
  • If you do not have curb side pick up, take your garbage to the dump often
  • Frequently wash garbage cans and recycle containers and lids with a strong smelling disinfectant

Bird/Pet food:

  • Fill bird feeders only through the winter months
  • Do not leave pet food outdoors. Feed pets indoors, not outside or in screened in areas or porches

Fruits/Vegetables/Compost:

  • Avoid landscaping with trees, shrubs or plants that produce food known to attract bears (some examples include crab apple trees, mountain ash, beech and oak)
  • Do not put meat, fish or sweet food (including fruit) in your composter
  • Remove vegetables and fallen fruit from the ground
  • Pick all ripe fruit from trees and bushes

Smells:

  • Be aware that cooking odours can attract bears
  • Remove grease and food residue from barbecue grills, including the grease cup underneath, after each use

Green Ribbon of Hope Campaign

At the Council meeting of April 27, 2010, Council proclaimed that May 25th be declared as National Missing Children's Day in the Township of Smith- Ennismore-Lakefield and the month of May be declared as Green Ribbon of Hope Month in the Township of Smith- Ennismore-Lakefield in an effort to promote the safe return of all missing children.

The Green Ribbon of Hope Campaign is aimed at bringing awareness to the community regarding the issue of missing children and how one can safeguard their child from predators, on-line or in the streets, which seek to harm their love ones. In the year 2007, 60,582 cases of missing children were reported to the RCMP National Missing Children Services, of which 21,293 were recorded here in the Province of Ontario alone.

The Green Ribbon of Hope™ Campaign was developed by the students of Holy Cross Secondary School in St. Catharines, after the 1992 disappearance of Kristen French. During the search for Kristen, her fellow students, teachers and friends chose as their symbol the Green Ribbon of Hope. Thanks to the efforts of the students of Holy Cross Secondary School, Kristen's memory lives on and the Green Ribbon of Hope has become a symbol of hope for all missing children and their families. The students of Holy Cross Secondary School have given Child Find the exclusive rights to the Green Ribbon of Hope.

The Green Ribbon Campaign, particularly the green symbol has been trademarked by Child Find and may not be used by any other institution or organization without expressed written consent of CHILD FINDCANADA INC.
